Will Grafenberg All Stars hit the spot?
Rap group to debut at Le Swimming

Dr. Ernest Gräfenberg was a real ladies man. He dedicated his life's work to identifying the elusive erogenous area for women that became known as the G-(Grafenberg)Spot.

Now his legacy lives on with the work of the Grafenberg All Stars, a Montreal based hip-hop duo who aim to hit the aural G-Spot and stimulate us with their phat beats and spitfire rhymes. The duo, Jerome Saibil (Bushman) and Eli Batalion (VowelMovement), are actually Ivy League graduates who have already garnered all sorts of accolades for their theatrical retelling of a biblical tale, called: Job: The Hip-Hop Musical, which has been a huge hit on the theatre and fringe festival circuit.

After the immense success of Job I and II, Jerome and Eli are pursuing their dream of becoming international rap superstars. Inspired by the likes of Jurassic 5, The Roots, and Blackalicious, the Grafenberg All Stars have been hard at work on their debut album, which should be available in September, an album they qualify as having a cartoonish hip-hop style.

Despite the name of the group and the fact that they write songs about pornographic midgets, don't expect some satirical send up without the stuff and substance to back it up. These guys are very serious, striving for a high musical standard (both members of the group have had comprehensive musical training), and consider themselves more aligned with Frank Zappa than Weird Al Yankovic. Saibil (Bushman) also cites as sources of inspiration psychedelic funk-soul outfit OutKast, and absurdist filmmakers, the Coen brothers - who, Bushman says, are models of how to maintain artistic integrity and sustain a unique signature style.

The Grafenberg All Stars do run the danger of not being taken seriously, but that doesn't worry them too much, Bushman says: "Someone who gets a whiff of what we do might not get it, but once they digest our gestalt, they will understand where we are coming from."

Grafenberg All Stars' official launch will be tomorrow at Le Swimming, 3643 St. Laurent Blvd. Tickets cost $7.
