Averting Disaster With Style

JOB: The HipHop Musical
Foqué dans la tête Productions

Locals who missed this much-kudo'ed production courtesy of Montreal's Foque Dans La Tête last season have another shot at the Fringe. This is a good thing of near-biblical proportions. Jerome Saibil (MC Cain) and Eli Batalion (MC Abel) work like Doggs in this smart, worldly-wise contemporary reworking of the classic tale of loyalty and submission, and the result is top drawer theatre. Set at a New York record label, our hero Job Lowe is systematically battered down by the machinations of company execs Jonathan Hoover and Louis Saphire, who make a bet on the ultimate mettle of their Employee of the Year. The tracks, by Paul Bercovitch and the abovementioned are a perfect match for their clever lyrics. It's not every day J.D. Salinger is invoked in a rap, and even rarer that a potentially disastrous concept like this could work so beautifully.
